• Distinctive New Styling Offers a Modern, Upscale Appearance
• “Travel Avalon Class” with Segment’s Only Reclining Rear Seat and Overall Comfort
• Modern Technologies Provide Comprehensible Convenience

CHICAGO (February, 10, 2010) – Toyota introduced the boldly redesigned 2011 Avalon today at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. Evoking a time when travel was sophisticated, elegant and comfortable, the new Avalon possesses a distinctive new exterior style while offering a restyled interior rich with premium touch points and practical new technologies.

Even with numerous refinements inside and out, the Avalon remains true to the idea that comfort is honest and uncomplicated, and “Traveling Avalon Class” is rich in simple, familiar pleasures.

The new Avalon has dynamic and expressive lines, and an infusion of comfort, safety and technology advancements that enrich the driving experience. Upgraded equipment and technology features, such as a touch-screen navigation system with real-time traffic, and Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability with music streaming to the audio system are among the improvements that enhance the 2011 Avalon’s excellent blend of spaciousness, comfort and technology.

“The Avalon has long been appreciated by smart, conscientious consumers who recognize quality materials and the beauty of detailed craftsmanship,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “The changes made for 2011 will allow us to build on our position in the premium large car segment. The competition does not stand still, and neither do we.”

Restyled at Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif., the Avalon is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), a “zero landfill” facility that also assembles the Camry, Camry Hybrid, and Venza. It was also developed at the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Dynamic New Exterior

For 2011, Calty restyled Avalon to project an elegant, outgoing presence. A wider, more substantial grille ties into state-of-the-art projector headlamps, working with a broad, undisturbed front hood to suggest a lowered center of gravity and emphasize the Avalon’s wide stance.

The new headlamps, which combine multi-reflector halogen high beams with halogen or HID low beams, utilize light pipes to create a signature, night-time appearance. The front fog lamps, now integrated into a trapezoidal front bumper, provide a wider angle of illumination.

Viewed from the side, the 2011 Avalon is enhanced by additional use of chrome trim, redesigned rocker panels, and glare-resistant outer mirrors with integrated turn signals. New 17-inch wheels on the Limited grade feature a 10-spoke design with a mirror finish.

At the rear of the car, identification is cleanly defined by a single Avalon logo located above the license plate. Dual-exhaust pipes are integrated into the cutaway trapezoid shape of the lower bumper for a modern image. Taillights have been reshaped to reduce turbulence at the rear, helping to create a lower coefficient of drag. The new lights integrate stop, turn and side marker lighting functions in one combined lamp. Unique LED light pipes with dark aluminized sides and both clear and red lenses project a modern appearance.

Spacious Interior Built For Comfort

For 2011, a new interior has been designed with a contemporary style. The new interior remains generously spacious and elegant, fitted with comfortable seating and thoughtfully integrated amenities. Coordinated colors and rich wood-grain materials were carefully chosen to convey an optimistic attitude and modern essence.

Standard leather-trimmed front seats and seatbacks on the Limited are fitted with ventilation systems and an enlarged perforation area to help keep them cool. Interior seats feature thicker stitching, which provides an elegant accent to the interior design. Active front headrests are also standard.

The rear seating area is configured to seat three passengers comfortably, with ample legroom and reclining rear seats, unique in the segment. The rear headrests have also been reshaped and enlarged for better support, and a convenient flip-down center armrest provides storage when the middle seat is not in use.

A power rear sunshade, deployable via a one-touch lever, filters direct sunlight coming through the rear window. The sunshade, which helps to protect rear seat passengers from unwanted light and heat, automatically detracts when the driver selects reverse gear.

A new instrument panel incorporates visually attractive and highly readable Optitron gauges that use graduated white illumination with white pointers. They are set inside smoked lenses and deep chrome rings that add depth and a sense of luxury.

The steering wheel includes controls for Bluetooth hands-free phones, the audio system, climate system, and the information center.

Technology-Enriched Environment

A comprehensive infusion of technology was designed into the new interior to ensure an enriched environment, with enhanced function and connectivity.

New standard equipment includes Bluetooth® hands-free phone and music streaming to the audio system from a compatible device, XM® satellite radio (subscription required), and both USB and 1/8-inch auxiliary connections for iPod® and other audio devices. Each of the three available audio systems can control iPods seamlessly using switches located on the steering wheel and display track information stored in the device.

Toyota’s latest DVD Navigation system has a newly adopted database and now has easier search and address input functionality. The Navigation system also offers new displays for road icons and points of interest, and a keyboard screen arranged in the same way as a personal computer.

The Avalon grade’s standard nine-speaker system offers exceptional sound quality, while the Limited grade features a standard 12-speaker, 660-watt JBL Premium Synthesis audio system with enhanced two-coil sub-woofer. The system uses 12 speakers and a 12-channel digital amplifier to deliver profoundly rich, full sound to all seats of the vehicle.

A rear-view monitor function is standard in the rear-view mirror or with the navigation system. The rear-view-mirror image includes on-screen back-up guides that help drivers to back into parking spots or driveways.

Performance and Efficiency Combined

Avalon’s exceptional combination of ample horsepower and excellent fuel economy offers one of the best overall dynamic performances in the large sedan segment.

The 2011 Avalon is powered by a 24-valve, dual-overhead cam 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. The engine is equipped with the latest dual VVT-i electronic valve-control mechanism that provides a broader powerband, while requiring less fuel and generating fewer emissions. It is mated to a multi-mode six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2011 Avalon is an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV), EPA-estimated to deliver 20 mpg in the city, 29 highway, and 23 combined, as good as or better than any V6 model in the segment.

A roadworthy mix of fine ride quality and accurate driving control is delivered by the Avalon’s MacPherson strut suspension, which uses coil springs at all four corners. Rack-and-pinion steering combines with front-wheel-drive and optimized steering gear for a natural handling feel.

Simple Comforts Throughout

A dual-zone climate control system has nine air-flow modes for more precise control of interior climate, and a clean-air filter removes dust and pollen. Doors use three stop positions instead of two for easier entrance and exit. A lockable glove box has a pneumatic-door damper and inner box illumination. The front-console box has a sliding armrest that moves 4.7 inches front to rear, able to accommodate a wide range of driver positions. The elegantly stitched top is padded with a double density cushion material for softness. Inside, there is a 12-volt outlet in addition to the USB and auxiliary audio terminals.

Safety is Standard

The new Avalon’s occupant-safety strategy includes use of extensively tested energy absorbing structures, protective side impact beams and overhead structure, advanced belt systems and active front headrests as standard equipment. Avalon will also have a redesigned accelerator pedal assembly and a brake override system.

Seven airbags, including a front knee bag for the driver, and front side curtain airbags for both rows, are also standard. Toyota’s standard Star Safety System includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, and TRAC traction control system. TRAC and VSC functions can be disengaged if the driver needs to free the vehicle if stuck in mud or snow.

A full-size spare and alloy wheel is standard. Each wheel has its own pressure sensor to warn if tire pressure drops, providing the driver with an early warning to find a safe place to change a tire.

Simplified Packaging

The 2011 Avalon will be available in two grades when it arrives in showrooms in the spring of 2010, Avalon and Limited. Both grades will be well equipped with standard equipment like eight-way leather-trimmed power driver’s seats, back-up camera, dual zone automatic climate control with air filtration, moonroof and 17-inch alloy wheels. Limited will have additional standard equipment, such as an eight-way passenger’s seat with lumbar support, driver’s seat cushion extension, rain-sensing wipers, Smart Key and cooled leather seats. Avalon grade can be upgraded with features like a JBL Synthesis sound system and heated front seats, while Navigation is optional for both grades.

Color and Trim

Avalon will be available in nine exterior colors including three new colors: Zephyr Blue Metallic, Cypress Pearl and Sizzling Crimson Mica. Additional colors include Cocoa Bean Metallic, Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Black, and Sandy Beach Metallic. Avalon grade will be mated to three leather-trimmed interior colors: Ivory, Light Gray, and Black. Limited grade receives Ivory, Light Gray, and Black Bordeaux trims with accent-color trim on the vertical surfaces.

Limited Warranty

Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. Toyota dealers have complete details on the limited warranty.

The redesigned 2011 Avalon will begin arriving at Toyota dealerships nationally in spring 2010.

DETROIT (Jan. 11, 2010) – Toyota will display an innovative Auto Access Seat, designed for use in the all-new 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan, for the first time at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Toyota is the first automaker in North America to offer a factory-installed, rotating, power ascending/descending lift-up seat. Designed internally, the Auto Access Seat will offer a new level of comfort and convenience to anyone who may need assistance getting in or out of a vehicle.

Factory installed at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI) assembly plant, the Auto Access Seat offers consumers a seamless purchase-process alternative to the current aftermarket installation method, which requires the consumer to purchase their vehicle and then have it modified by an aftermarket supplier.

The Sienna minivan equipped with the Auto Access Seat will offer a much needed transportation solution for the caregivers of an elderly parent or spouse with a walking disability, a disabled veteran, or for the parents of child with a disability.

The Auto Access Seat features a one-touch operation and benefits from the all-new Sienna’s spacious interior and wide-opening sliding doors. A seat-mounted ingress/egress switch and a wireless remote control allows for easy and flexible seat operation. The seat rotates 90 degrees and can be lowered to within 19 inches of the ground to further facilitate easier passenger transfers at the exact height required.

Once inside, the Auto Access Seat occupant can utilize reclining and slide switches located on both sides of the seat. This allows operation of up to four inches of slide travel and reclining of up to 24 degrees. The auto-recline feature also allows for safe head clearance through the door frame during entry and exit. The compact design of the seat also provides ample legroom for third-row passengers.

The Auto Access Seat is equipped with a number of safety attributes, including an audible beep when the seat is in operation, and a park-shift interlock feature that prevents seat operation if the vehicle is not in the “Park” position. A sliding door sensor allows the seat to operate only when the sliding door is completely open. Two audible beeps will warn the user of a partially open sliding-door condition, or if the seat is not fully stowed when the door close button is pressed. A manual retraction function allows the seat to be retracted fully in the event of a vehicle power failure.

The Auto Access Seat also features obstruction-detection programming, which notifies the operator with two audible beeps and halts seat operation. The seat will retract when an obstruction is met to facilitate easier removal of the object.

Additional safety features include Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) to properly secure any iso-fix style child safety seat. The Auto Access Seat meets all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

The Auto Access Seat will be available on Sienna LE and XLE models. The seat fabric matches the vehicle interior fabric and has a stain- and odor-resistant treatment. The seat is vinyl trimmed on the XLE model to better match the XLE grade interior style and allows for easier passenger transfer.

Consumers will benefit from Toyota quality, durability, and reliability with the new Auto Access Seat system. The seat-operating mechanism is link-driven, allowing enhanced durability and a more quiet operation than chain-driven systems. The Auto Access Seat has a lift capacity of up to 330 lbs., making it useful for people of all sizes or those who carry specialized medical equipment. Owners will also enjoy the convenience of having the seat system serviced at their local Toyota dealership, which comes with a comprehensive three-year/36,000 mile factory warranty.

Toyota’s Auto Access Seat will be available when the new third-generation Sienna goes on sale in February 2010 (dealer order may be required).

Toyota will also display a new wheelchair-accessible Sienna Rampvan converted by BraunAbility at the Detroit show. With an automatic side-entry ramp, 10-inch-lowered floor, 56-inch-tall side-door opening and removable front seats; wheelchair users can choose to ride in the center of the van, the front-passenger position, or even drive from their chair. This state-of-the-art conversion takes full advantage of the innovative features of the all-new Sienna and will be available in the second quarter of 2010. BraunAbility is the leading manufacturer of accessible wheelchair vans and wheelchair lifts.

The 2011 Sienna has been reinvented to handle these needs as it shifts to a more expressive and dynamic vehicle with a stronger profile, high shoulder character and responsive handling. With state-of the art features and rewarding driving dynamics, it is a vehicle that car-lovers will find satisfying to drive. Sienna will offer new models, including a sporty SE and a four-cylinder powertrain, as it continues to be the only offering in the segment with an all-wheel-drive option.

“The all-new Sienna is an example of Toyota’s commitment to lead the marketplace as it anticipates consumers’ needs and changes in lifestyle,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. The third-generation Sienna combines a contemporary style with features not previously seen in a minivan, and a fun-to-drive spirit that will surprise many, along with the flexibility, spaciousness and features that have defined the segment.

The Sienna was designed by Toyota’s Calty Design Research and developed at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., with assembly being accomplished at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana.

Visually Intriguing
The Sienna will come in five conveniently configured grades, all sharing a distinctly new visual direction and features. The third-generation Sienna explores a more modernly advanced and bold design. The sportier profile is complemented with distinctive window shapes. Working closely with engineering, Sienna designers were able to create a high and wide shoulder to embed a deliberately hidden door slider within the window graphic.

The strong high shoulder and distinct fender flares visually emphasize the wheels. Dimensionally, the new Sienna rides on the same wheelbase as the prior generation, but it is wider and slightly shorter overall.

In the front is a bold face design. Sophisticated headlamps angled higher than the grille lends a confident front presence. The sculptural rear corner separates the Sienna from boxy minivans as it surrounds the functional yet elegant LED taillights.

The interior features upscale quality and elegance, yet every element are logical and functional. The distinctive swept shape of the IP creates the perception of increased personal space for both driver and passenger. Careful attention to the details adds extra value to each component. Sleek seat designs add flexibility and roominess while central climate and audio controls are integrated into a single graphic element.

Overall, the new Sienna has a sportier, classier appearance. A Cd of 0.306 is the result of careful design work and is a contributing factor in maintaining a quiet cabin and providing excellent fuel economy.

Power, Plus Efficiency
A choice of two responsive DOHC engines will be available: a 3.5-liter V6 or 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. Both engines offer the latest in efficient, lightweight technology, including Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), roller rocker arms and an Acoustically Controlled Induction System (ACIS) that changes the length of the air-intake pipe to supply more torque on demand.

The 3.5-liter V6 makes 266 horsepower at 6,200 rpm, with expected EPA-estimated mileage ratings of 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway (16 mpg city/22 mpg highway on AWD models). It also has a 3,500-pound tow capacity. With 187 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine produces responsive power that exceeds some competitors V6 performance, while delivering expected EPA-estimated fuel efficiency ratings of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Both engines are matched with state-of-the-art, electronically controlled six-speed transmissions with sequential shift that provide smooth gear-shift feeling, quiet performance and a lightweight, compact size.

The suspension uses front MacPherson struts, combined with rack-and pinion steering for smooth, linear steering feel. Electronic Power Steering (EPS) delivers a more solid direct on-road feel. With a wider stance, the new Sienna has a more direct steering feel. Under-body aero parts also contribute to dynamic performance.

Models and Features
The Sienna will come in five grades: Sienna grade, LE, SE, XLE and Limited. All-wheel-drive is available with the V6 on LE, XLE and Limited models.

With five distinct model choices, the new Sienna can be tailored to a wide range of purposes and pocketbooks. The Sienna can be configured with seven- or eight-passenger seating, in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, with a range of prices and features to accommodate different mixes of practical needs and high aspirations.

The Sienna and LE grades are available with either the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine or the 3.5-liter V6. The value-driven Sienna grade and popular LE are equipped with an array of standard features that include: cruise control, Daytime Running Lights with manual on/off feature, tri-zone air conditioning, six- or eight-way-adjustable driver’s captain’s chair, power windows with auto up/down and jam protection, AM/FM CD player with four speakers, XM compatibility, auxiliary jack, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and three 12V outlets, among other amenities. The Star Safety SystemTM, which includes Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and Traction Control (TRAC), is standard on all models.

The LE V6 model is upgraded with even more features including dual power-sliding doors and power rear door, a power driver seat with power lumbar support, electrochromatic rearview mirror with Homelink™, backup camera, rear window sunshades, AM/FM/MP3 CD player, integrated XM® satellite radio (subscription required), auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod® connectivity, and hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology, and steering wheel audio controls. These features can be added to the four-cylinder model as a package.

The XLE builds on the LE, adding features such as leather-trimmed seats, moonroof, and an anti-theft system with engine immobilizer, remote keyless entry, and heated front seats. Select optional XLE equipment includes a 10-speaker JBL® premium sound system with voice-activated DVD Navigation and Panorama rear camera with integrated back-up guides, XM® NavTraffic (subscription required), rear-seat Dual View Entertainment system, and an auxiliary audio jack and USB port with iPod® connectivity.

The Limited is designed for customers who want all the features with more luxury. The standard equipment list is extensive, including new second-row Lounge Seating and a power 60/40 Split & Stow third-row seat, front and rear parking sonar, dual moonroof, Smart Key, and Safety Connect™. Select options include those available on the XLE plus HID auto high-beam auto-high beam headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

New Sporty SE
Given its upgraded engineering, every Sienna will ride well and track cleanly through corners, but none more so than the newest addition to the line: the sporty SE.

The SE is designed for those who appreciate an even sportier design with responsive performance. The front has a more aggressive appearance and the side skirting visually lowers the vehicle. Aerodynamic sculpting hugs the standard 19-inch alloy wheels, which are specially tuned for sportier handling. Separating the SE further from other grades, the smoked tail lamps create a visually prominent statement. The SE sits lower, on a sport-tuned suspension for quicker feedback and better handling. Additionally, the SE is built with exclusive instrumentation and unique interior colors and trim.

Comfort Remains Key
The cabin of the new Sienna represents a conceptual leap forward, blending options for more individual space, better cargo capacity, and improved group interaction.

The interior is more than two inches longer, and the seats now have longer ranges of travel, making it possible to comfortably accommodate a wider range of heights and sizes.

The front seats have more rearward travel, and the steering wheel has a less upright position, so the driver can adopt a comfortable driving posture. The driver’s instruments and controls are clear and concise, and the greater cabin width helps create extended personal space for both driver and front passenger.

Numerous storage bins, cupholders and cargo spaces have been strategically placed in convenient locations. A conversation mirror, integrated into the sunglass case in the overhead console, allows visual contact with rear seat passengers.

Throughout the cabin, there is an open field of view to create an airy, roomy ambiance. With wider fields of vision rearmost passengers can see forward more easily.

Both seven- and eight-seat cabins can be configured for a full contingent of passengers, a load of cargo, or a convenient mix of both. In seven-seat cabins, the second row captain chairs slide 23 inches, moving to the rear to create legroom for the tallest passengers and easier ingress and egress. They can be moved forward close to the front seats to make it easy to care for a child passenger, while also allowing easy access for third-row passengers.

A sliding center console on the XLE all-wheel-drive and Limited grades can be shared between the front seats and second row passengers. The illuminated console slides into the second row area to provide convenient access for both rows, so the need for storage and passenger comfort can be equally served.

For even more passenger comfort, there is standard second-row lounge seating on the Limited grade, which includes leg and foot support. Second-row captain chairs on all grades have dual armrests, and a one-motion release mechanism in case the seat needs to be removed.

On eight-passenger models, the second-row center seat can be removed and stowed in the left side of the rear-storage area. When the center seat is stowed, a cupholder and storage tray is revealed. The eight-passenger interior can easily be optimized for seven passengers, and quickly reconfigured back for eight.

The second-row seats also feature a Tip Up and Long Slide feature, allowing them to slide forward and back on extended rails, making more room for people or cargo as the need arises. All second row seats, regardless of configuration, move out of the way with one touch to gain easy access to the third row seats.

The 60/40 Split and Stow third-row seating folds flat with one motion manually, with the Limited front-wheel drive receiving a power feature. The third row has been moved about two inches rearward for enhanced comfort. With the third-row seat in use, there is enough storage for five golf bags or four large suitcases. Four handy grocery hooks, with two in the back and two in the second row seatbacks, add storage convenience.

It is easier than ever to load the Sienna, thanks to wider doors and one-touch second-row seats. By sliding the second-row seats all the way to the rear, a walk-in aisle is created, making it easier to enter, exit, install a child seat, or place a child in a seat. The second-row seats can be moved all the way to the front, just behind the front row, to maximize rear cargo capacity, especially with the third-row stowed flat.

With the third row seat stowed and the second row seat removed, the cargo area is approximately eight feet long and four feet wide. The back door opening is broad and spacious, set at a height that makes loading and unloading easy.

A cabin air filter is standard along with an air-conditioning system that controls the temperature of three separate zones.

Innovative Technologies
A Toyota first rear-seat Dual View Entertainment Center is another innovative option. The system uses two displays side-by-side to create a seamless 16.4-inch widescreen image from a single source. When two separate entertainment options are called for, the system can split the screen into two individual screens, each with input from separate sources. Used as a single screen, it can be easily seen from the third row, and it can be operated from any seat via remote control. Used as two screens, the system can accommodate the preferences of two separate passengers who might want to play a video game or watch a second DVD simultaneously via auxiliary inputs.

Other technological upgrades include a Toyota-first Panorama Camera rear monitor. It provides two views behind the vehicle including a 180-degree view, and on-screen back-up guides, helping drivers to reverse out of parking spots or driveways.

Safety for All
An enhanced version of Toyota’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is standard on all 2011 Sienna models. VSC coordinates the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist with Traction Control (TRAC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS), to help provide a the driver a better-integrated, controlled vehicle in the event of an emergency maneuver.

A Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pre-collision seatbelt system is an available option on Limited, as is the latest in advanced vehicle control technology: Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM). The VDIM system coordinates brake control with engine output and steering inputs, allowing all the control and safety systems to cooperate seamlessly. Unlike reactive traction systems, VDIM operates proactively. During normal driving, the system works smoothly to enhance control even before the vehicle reaches its limits.

Seven airbags are standard equipment, including dual-stage front and seat-mounted side airbags for driver and front passenger, plus a new driver’s side knee airbag. Side curtain airbags cover the length of the cabin, from the front seats to the third row.

The new Safety Connect™ telematics system is standard on Limited and optional on XLE. Safety Connect offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. A complimentary one-year trial subscription is included.

In case of airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision, Automatic Collision Notification is designed to automatically call a response center. If a response agent cannot communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the nearest emergency-services provider to dispatch assistance.

Pushing the in-vehicle “SOS” button allows drivers to reach the response center to request help in an emergency as well as for a wide range of roadside assistance needs. If a Sienna equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, agents can work with local authorities to help locate and recover the vehicle.

The all-new 2011 Sienna will begin arriving at Toyota dealerships in February 2010.

The Midnight Rider Tundra Tailgater by Brooks & Dunn is a tribute to the legendary country music duo’s career that has spanned over 20 years. The Tundra full-size pickup has been a sponsor of Brooks & Dunn for the past three-plus years and the Tundra Tailgater is Toyota’s way of celebrating the music duo’s upcoming 2010 farewell tour.

The concept for this one-of-a-kind Tundra Tailgater was developed through Toyota’s partnership with Brooks & Dunn. Inspired by the music duo’s large truck-devoted fan base, Toyota wanted to push the boundaries of bed utility and capture the imagery of the truck trucker. Built by The B.A.D. Company, the customized Tundra CrewMax Limited full-size 4×2 V8 pickup was a perfect fit for the ultimate tailgating vehicle.

The Ultimate Tailgating Experience® occurs when you slide out the tailgate, exposing a Grill N Chill® cooking area from Go! Products. The pull-out Grill N Chill features a cooking space with countertops, infrared barbeque, beverage tap and ice chest. An electronically operated tonneau cover enhances your tailgate party with a bed-installed 42-inch flat screen TV and sound system by Kicker. The sound system features a dual subwoofer system and a separate amp, four two-way speakers with tweeters and separate crossovers, and dual two-channel amps with separate equalizers and speaker control units.

On the outside, the truck features custom black paint treated with silver metallic flakes. The exterior is accented by custom western-engraved silver door handles, a front grille adorned with a chrome Brooks & Dunn logo steer skull, a chrome-accented steer skull tailgate handle, and a hand-tooled black saddle leather-trim tonneau cover surrounded with custom Brooks & Dunn silver conchos, all created by noted silversmith, artist and horseman, Clint Mortenson of Mortenson Silver & Saddles. Also added is a Brooks & Dunn license plate frame recognizing 20 years of hit music. The exterior is topped off with 20-inch Mickey Thompson “Classic Lock” polished aluminum wheels with 35-inch Mickey Thompson “Claw” off-road tires, Bushwacker bolt-on fender flares, a three-inch suspension lift, and Toyota accessorized chrome tube steps.

Inside, The B.A.D. Company complements the exterior of the Tundra Tailgater with black leather trim seats and silver accents. Also added is a hand-tooled silver cupholder faceplate and custom saddle horn shift knob highlighted with a silver cap. The interior features a Toyota navigation system and rear seat entertainment. Audio was upgraded with Kicker speakers including one subwoofer, one two-way speaker with separate tweeter crossover in each door, four more separate tweeters mounted throughout the cab, and three amps with an equalizer.

In addition to celebrating 20 years of great music, the vast exposure of the Tundra Tailgater at the 2009 SEMA Show and the Brooks & Dunn farewell concert tour allows Toyota the opportunity to gauge consumer reaction towards the various interior treatments and bed utility, which can help influence future design possibilities.

SUV is Toyota’s 12th North American-built model

PRINCETON, Ind. (October 8, 2009) – Production of the Highlander sport utility vehicle, Toyota’s 12th North American-built model, began today at the company’s plant in Princeton, Indiana. The $450 million investment is part of the adjustments Toyota began last year in order to better utilize manufacturing capacity.

Production of the Tundra pickup, originally in Indiana, was consolidated last fall in the Tundra plant in Texas. Since then Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI), which also builds the Sienna and Sequoia, has been preparing for the Highlander.

“Highlander production gives us better use of our capacity and demonstrates our continued commitment to the U.S. and the state of Indiana,” said Wil James, TMMI senior vice president.

TMMI reacted to several months of slow production by retaining all of its 4,200 team members, who were further trained and improved manufacturing processes.

“The result is long-term sustainability of this factory, which is important to our customers, team members, suppliers and the local community,” James said.

TMMI now represents a $3.7 billion investment. The addition of Highlander boosts production at other Toyota plants such as West Virginia, where the 6-cylinder engine is made, and at nearly 250 of Toyota’s North American suppliers.

In Indiana alone, Highlander parts and components including items such as steel, brake parts and interior component assemblies will be provided by about 30 Tier 1 suppliers.

Since it was introduced in 2000, more than 1 million Highlanders have been sold in the U.S. The Highlander is available in Base, Sport and Limited grades in both two-wheel and full-time four-wheel-drive models. Features include: hill assist, Smart Key, flexible second row seating and a separate glass hatch.

About Toyota
Toyota (NYSE:TM) established operations in North America in 1957 and currently operates 14 manufacturing plants. There are more than 1,800 Toyota, Lexus and Scion dealerships in North America which sold more than 2.5 million vehicles in 2008. Toyota directly employs nearly 41,000 in North America and its investment here is currently valued at more than $23 billion, including sales and manufacturing operations, research and development, financial services and design. Toyota’s annual purchasing of parts, materials, goods and services from North American suppliers totals nearly $25 billion.

Toyota currently produces 12 vehicles in North America, including the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Sienna, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza and the Lexus RX 350.

TORRANCE, Calif. (July 28, 2009) – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc. today announced today the annual subscription price for its all-new, proprietary telematics system, Safety Connect. The system will soon be an available option on the all-new MY10 Prius.

A complimentary one-year trial subscription of Safety Connect is included on all purchases of new Toyota Prius vehicles equipped with the service. One-year renewal subscriptions to Safety Connect will be available for $139.95, with multi-year subscriptions also available.

Safety and Security Features

Safety Connect is designed to help Toyota drivers feel even more secure on the road, and the designated Safety Connect response center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week―every day of the year. Using the system’s embedded cellular and GPS technology, subscribed Prius vehicles will provide these four safety and security features:

Automatic Collision Notification (ACN)

Helping drivers receive the necessary response from emergency services, in case of either airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision, the system is designed to automatically call the response center. The responding agent receives the vehicle’s location and attempts to speak with the vehicle occupants to assess the level of emergency. If the occupants are unable to communicate, the agent automatically treats the call as an emergency, contacts the nearest emergency services provider to describe the situation, and requests that assistance be sent to the location.

Stolen Vehicle Location (SVL)

If a subscribed Safety Connect–equipped vehicle is stolen, Safety Connect can work with local authorities to help them in the attempt to locate the vehicle. After filing a police report, the owner can call the Safety Connect response center to initiate this service.

Emergency Assistance Button (SOS)

In the event of an emergency on the road, a push of the “SOS” button will initiate a call to the Safety Connect response center. The answering agent can determine the vehicle’s location, assess the emergency, and request a dispatch of the necessary assistance.

Roadside Assistance

Via the “SOS” button, Safety Connect response-center agents can help drivers with a wide range of needs, such as: towing, jump start, flat tire, fuel delivery, etc.

Safety Connect will be available on MY10 Prius vehicles manufactured after August 1, 2009.

TORRANCE, Calif. (July 16, 2009) – Scion today announced the launch of its new “Brand Manifesto” campaign, intended to engage a new youthful audience of creative influencers. Channeled through TV spots, print, online and out-of-home media, bold manifestos were created to expose Scion’s declaration for both individuality and originality.

To celebrate the new campaign today, two innovative and engaging microsites that will attract a youthful trend-leading audience to the Scion brand will go live. The first of two sites, Pixel Reveal (www.ScionReveal.com), invites visitors to register to win a highly customized one-of-a-kind Scion worth over $34,000. A few items on the lengthy list of parts and modifications found on this car include a custom paint job, performance air intake, rear spoiler and a set of 19-inch wheels.

Registrants can visit the site up to ten times a day, with each visit revealing more pixels that together produce a complete image of the grand prize car. The registrant that reveals the last pixel of the one-million pixel image will win the car.

“With each one of its many accessories and custom modifications, this one-of-a-kind Scion truly defines the brand’s philosophy of personalization through customization,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “I can’t wait until the winner reveals the millionth pixel and takes home this absolutely remarkable ride.”

The second microsite, entitled Speechifier (www.BecomeNoneOfUs.com), engages visitors to create their own personal manifesto with an inventive twist. Creatives can input their unique statement and the Speechifier will automatically generate video versions of their message using a montage of video clips featuring celebrities and political icons. Users can then embed their personal manifesto video into their favorite social media sites for their peers to experience.

“From day one, Scion has targeted audiences that express creativity in everything they do,” voiced Hollis. “Speechifier and the other elements in the Brand Manifesto campaign, continue to attract new and youthful individuals, and encourage them to make a statement and be heard.”

With “Become one of us by becoming none of us,” serving as a recurring manifesto for all of the Scion models, individuals alike are encouraged to be true to themselves by being original and never following. The campaign also presents manifestos that are specific to each of the three Scion models, calling attention to their unique personalities.

xD: the aggressive and edgy subcompact five-door

The new 2010 Toyota Prius, with more horsepower, more cargo space, and more fuel economy, is better than ever—and all at an affordable price

By Thane Peterson

Up Front

Toyota (TM) has done a masterful job of redesigning the Prius, the nation’s top-selling hybrid vehicle since first coming out in 1997. The 2010 Prius, which is just now hitting dealer showrooms, is the first mainstream model to be rated at 50 miles per gallon (up from 46 mpg before), even though it’s noticeably peppier than the previous version. The new Prius also is surprisingly spacious, with rear seats that verge on being downright roomy, which also fold down in a 60/40 pattern to create a big hauling space, and a 21.6 cu. ft. luggage area in back.

Even so, the 2010′s base sticker price is just $21,750, (though the new, entry-level Prius I model at that price won’t be available until September), which is $1,000 less than the cheapest ’09 Prius. You can get a conventionally powered compact for cheaper, but it won’t be roomy enough for most families. Factoring in fuel, insurance, repairs, and other costs over five years, Consumer Reports calculated in its April issue that the 2009 Prius offered the best overall value of any model on the market. Given its better fuel economy, I’d guess the 2010 Prius will earn the same distinction.

The 2010 Prius’ powerplant consists of a 1.8-liter, 98-horsepower gasoline engine and two electric motors tied together by a planetary gearset that acts as a continuously variable transmission. Total horsepower is now 134, up from 110 before.

Until the new, entry-level model comes out, the Prius is available in four trim levels. The Prius II, which starts at $22,750, comes standard with keyless ignition, full-power accessories, cruise control, a six-speaker sound system, a tilting and telescoping steering wheel, and a hybrid display. The Prius III ($23,750) has all that plus Bluetooth capability and an upgraded sound system. The Prius IV ($26,550) adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, an auto-dimming mirror, and driver-adjustable lumbar support. The top-of-the-line Prius V ($28,020) adds 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, and LED headlights.

Toyota has also added some techie features to the Prius in three option packages. The $1,800 Navigation Package includes a navigation system, plus an upgraded, eight-speaker sound system, backup camera, and the possibility of adding real-time traffic alerts. The $3,600 Solar Roof Package includes the navigation system as well as a moonroof and a solar-powered system that cools the car when it’s parked on hot days. The $4,500 Advanced Technology Package includes the navigation system, as well as a dynamic cruise-control system, lane departure alert, and Intelligent Parking Assist (which you may have seen in Lexus TV commercials—it more or less parallel-parks the car automatically).

The Prius is now rated to get 51 mpg in the city and 48 on the highway (up from the previous Prius’ 48/45). That puts it well ahead of its main competitors, including Honda’s (HMC) new Insight (41 city, 43 highway, and 41 on average); the Honda Civic Hybrid (40/45/42); the Ford (F) Fusion Hybrid (41/36/39); the Toyota Camry Hybrid (33/34/34); Nissan’s (NSANY) Altima Hybrid (35/33/34); and Volkswagen’s (VOWG) Jetta TDI diesel (29/40/33).

The government hasn’t yet crash-tested the 2010 Prius, but the previous model had four- and five-star ratings in all categories. The 2010 comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock brakes, and front, side, and head-protecting airbags, as well as a separate bag to protect the driver’s knees.

Behind the Wheel

The Prius isn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, a driving enthusiast’s car. Even though a new electronic power-steering system has improved the feeling of connection to the road, to me the car still has the stiff, awkward feel of a gigantic toy. That impression is reinforced when you actually drive the Prius. You put the knobby little shifter in forward, reverse, neutral, or “B” (which adds extra braking on long downhills) and hit the gas. The engine is almost silent and the CVT unwinds in a continuous skein without ever shifting. The whole experience is a little unsettling until you get used to it.

The new Prius is now rated to accelerate from zero to 60 in 9.8 seconds, down from more than 10 seconds for the second-generation Prius. But that’s still relatively slow. I clocked the Camry Hybrid at more than a second faster, and the Nissan Altima Hybrid at a comparatively blazing 7.6 seconds in zero-to-60 runs.

The Prius now has three power settings. For day-to-day driving there’s “ECO,” which conserves gas. When you want a bit more oomph, pushing the “Power” button quickens throttle response, mainly in the midrange between, say, 30 mph and 60 mph. In the “EV” setting, the car runs for a short time on electric power, though only at speeds under 25 mph.

The Prius’ appeal is that you become obsessed with finding new ways to eke out higher mileage readings from the multiple graphic displays on the dashboard. If you work at it, by toggling back and forth between gas pedal and brake (to get the maximum charging out of the regenerative braking system), accelerating gently, braking gradually to a stop, and starting off in EV mode, you can boost mileage over 70 mpg for short spells. Trying to get mileage even higher becomes a game.
